“If we love and take care of the place we are in, we arrive to what we are looking for.”
—- Sergio Larrain, Valparaiso
In 1963, the Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain published a modest volume of seventeen photographs. It featured black and white images of street scenes in the Chilean cities of Santiago and Valparaiso.
While, Valparaiso, a gritty South American port city, and The Sea Ranch might seem to have little in common, they both front the Pacific Ocean and are connected by some 6,000 miles of coastline. The photographs of The Sea Ranch in this book are made with a technology similar to what Larrain used in the 1960’s — a 35mm camera and black and white film. This book of seventeen photographs from 2023-2024, printed in tritone, accompanies a 2025 exhibition at The Sea Ranch and is a small tribute to the concept of his original volume.
